Dear Wildfowl Carver,
Shorebirds are a great choice for carving. They come in such a variety of sizes and shapes, all with their own distinctive features. In our new Collection, Stunning Shorebirds from We Like Wildfowl Carving, dig into some solid reference work to prepare you for your next shorebird carving project.
The Royal Tern is a sleek seabird with an active social life. These bright white birds show up along shorelines on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, from the US and as far south as the east coast of Argentina. Sometimes called “carrot bills,” they have a bright orange bill and a spiky black crest. These birds are super social, settling in to nesting colonies with 20,000 or more birds. Read our Reference Page to learn more about this beautiful bird—and its interesting nesting habit—then download our pattern and color guide to get started on your own carving.
What do you call a big black shorebird that’s not waterproof and can sink like a stone? Water turkey. Snakebird. Or, more properly, Anhinga. This non-waterproof water bird looks like a prehistoric throwback, and it is: some anhinga fossils date back a million years! Anhingas look a little like cormorants from a distance, but that’s where the similarity ends. Anhingas are fairly anti-social and tend to squabble with neighbors who interfere with their fishing. Their striking black-and-white plumage makes them an aquatic standout; but the anhinga’s dagger-sharp bill is its most useful feature.

In Not-So-Hard Bittern, follow carver Laurie Truhart’s path to create the clever Least Bittern. This tiny heron — one of the smallest in the world — actually avoids the shallows water where most herons hunt, heading for deeper waters. The Least Bittern has quite impressive feet, ideal for clinging to cattails and reeds. And its body is pretty flexible, too: it can squeeze through some really tight spaces, navigating tangled vegetation with ease. Chances are you’re more likely to hear the Least Bittern than see it, since it lives in dense marshes and migrates at night.
Another clever hunter hunts in the open — with a twist. The Wilson’s Phalarope is quite a sight on the water, spinning madly to create its own personal vortex. The intentional turbulence of the water creates a whirlpool that stirs up tiny invertebrates in the bottom of lakes and ponds, providing the bird with plenty of food for dinner. Another interesting aspect of this species is its role reversal: the female is larger, more colorful, and less inclined to help raise its young.
Our Stunning Shorebirds Collection features in-depth reference material to help you get familiar with each bird. Downloadable patterns give you the detailed views you need to start your carving. And a color guide helps you bring your carving to life.
