In this chapter we’re going to talk about patterns.
I recommend that everyone sketch and draw their own patterns.
Now, the book provides a good starting point for a pattern, and in this case, I’ve traced the pattern from the book and made a few adjustments to it for the bird that we’ll be carving in this edition.
I traced the pattern with an HB pencil so that I have a good trace of lead on the side of the tracing paper.
Then I’m going to transfer the pattern to poster board, and I’m going to do that by turning lead side down on the poster board and rubbing it firmly with my thumbnail or other hard object.
In this way, I transfer the pattern to the poster board, and then I’m going to cut the pattern out with an X Acto knife.
Here are the pieces that we’ll end up with. We’ll have the profile view of the head, and I’ll save the piece from around the profile view of the head for use with a template.
We’ll have the plan view of the head, the plan view or top view of the head, and again, I’ll save the outside periphery of the pattern piece of poster board for a template.
And then we’ll also have the profile and plan view of the bodies. These are the pieces that you should end up with for your carving.
